Selection of energy related funding opportunities
Thanks as ever to Dr Jeff Hardy at UKERC for identifying most of these opportunities.
EPSRC has recently published its future funding calls 2009-2011, including many related to energy technologies. Current EPSRC calls can be found here. Energy related grants awarded over the past six months are here, including a number from Scotland (thanks to Anne Bruce at IPA for compiling this).
EPSRC Collaboration Fund - Call for Expressions of Interest
The Collaboration Fund offers support to researchers wishing to work with a commercialising partner in taking forward business opportunities generated from EPSRC funded research. Support will combine grant funding with the opportunity of project mentoring and access to business planning advice. This pilot initiative is financed by the EPSRC and managed by Finance South East, to whom all enquiries and applications should be made. Full details of the call and application procedure (which is not via Je-S) can be found at the Finance South East website. Closing date for Expressions of Interest is
11 December 2009.
Royal Society Industry Fellowships 2010 – Call for Applications
These appointments (for up to two years full time or pro-rata) are funded by the Royal Society, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council, Rolls-Royce plc and Astra Zeneca.
The scheme aims to enhance knowledge transfer in science and technology between those in industry and those in academia. It provides opportunities for an academic scientist to work on a collaborative project with industry, or someone employed in industry to work on a collaborative project with a university department or a not-for-profit research organisation. It is anticipated that fellows will establish personal and corporate links between the two sectors in the UK as a foundation for their long-term future development.Closing date for applications: 2010 Round 2 - Wednesday 24 March 2010
NSF/EPSRC Materials 2009 - Call for Proposals
EPSRC is participating in the 2009 call by the National Science Foundation (NSF) entitled: Materials World Network: Cooperative Activity in Materials Research between U.S. Investigators and their Counterparts Abroad (MWN). The call is an initiative to foster opportunities for collaborative activities in materials research between researchers in the U.S. and the rest of the world. The EPSRC and NSF invite investigators from the UK and the US (and any other collaborating nation) to formulate a joint collaborative project or networking activity in materials research. Closing date for Proposals is 11 November 2009.
BBSRC IBTI Club Call
The
IBTI Club call, supported by a partnership between BBSRC, EPSRC, industry and the Bioscience for Business Knowledge Transfer Network, is an opportunity for chemists, engineers and biologists to work together to solve the challenges in biorefining. The development of biorefining into a commercially viable and sustainable industrial process is clearly a major undertaking, which will require interdisciplinary research encompassing the biological and physical sciences. The club wishes to provide a means for academics with relevant expertise to collaborate on innovative and novel scientific areas, which are of relevance to this industry. D
eadline for outline applications is 5 November 2009.
ETI Optimising Thermal Efficiency of Existing Housing Project
This
project will achieve this through development of whole house models of refurbishment solutions which take account of both energy demand and supply side factors that impact the energy efficiency of a house. In conjunction with this, the project will also examine: the retrofit processes for those models, an assessment of the impact on building material supply chain, and an assessment of the impact on and views of householders. The project will also develop a national trends model to enable large scale planning for volume retrofit regionally and nationally.
The ETI is seeking proposals, each of which must address the complete scope of work, from either single organisations, consortium lead co-ordinators or prime contractors with sub contractors to supplement their capabilities. Deadline for submitting a Proposal is 17 November 2009.
Carbon Trust Fuel Cells Challenge
The Carbon Trust is reaching out to UK innovators to
submit ideas for a solution. And you don’t even need to be a fuel cells specialist to enter. If you work with polymers, electrodes, membranes or chemicals you may have a technology/material that can be applied to fuel cells. They can partner you with the relevant experts to help you design a novel fuel cell. Closing date for submissions is
20 November 2009.
Brian Mercer Award for Innovation
The Brian Mercer Award for Innovation provides funding for individuals or groups to develop an already proven concept or prototype in the general areas of the built environment, nanoscience/nanotechnology, clean technology and energy, through to the creation of a near-market product for commercial exploitation, i.e. to a stage where an approach for venture capital becomes a reality. Awards will be made in the areas of the built environment, clean technology, energy, nanoscience and nanotechnology. Closing date is
14 December 2009. For more information, please see the Royal Society website

COST open call
COST invites researchers throughout Europe to submit proposals for research networks and use this unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and to embark on new European perspectives. COST's main objective is to stimulate new, innovative and interdisciplinary scientific networks in Europe. COST activities (Actions) are carried out by research teams to strengthen the foundations for building scientific excellence in Europe. This continuous call is thematically open. COST invites proposals for new COST Actions contributing to the scientific, economic, cultural or societal development of Europe. Proposals playing a precursor role for other European programmes involving young groups' ideas are especially welcome.

EUROSTARS - Funding for Research Intensive SMEs
Eurostars is the first European funding and support programme open to all sectors to be specifically dedicated for innovative intensive and research performing SMEs. The programme’s purpose is to provide funding for market-orientated R&D, specifically with the active participation of R&D performing SMEs. The Eurostars Programme is aimed at stimulating these SMEs to lead international collaborative research and innovation projects by easing access to support and funding.
Eurostars takes a ‘bottom-up' approach to project generation. Projects can address any technological area and should be aimed at the development of a new product, process or service.
