Mathematical modelling and optimisation of a downhole antistick-slip tool (AST) for reduction of torsional vibrations

Stick slip, or drillstring torsional vibrations occur when the drillstring is not stiff enough to support stable drilling and the drillbit stalls. The ‘’TOMAX’’ anti-stall-tool (AST) is a tool which mitigates stick slip. This project develops a mathematical model of the drillstring and AST, to analyse the dynamic stability and investigate the design. Preliminary results will be presented in this talk, along with plans for experimental validation.
