The New Executive Director of ETP, Dr Barrie Shepherd, starts 12 August 2013.
Barrie has over 30 years’ experience of R&D, project management, consultancy and business development covering a broad range of energy technologies. After completing a BSc in physics (St Andrews), an MSc in the physics of materials (Bristol) and a DPhil in neutron radiation (Oxford), he joined the National Nuclear Corporation where he set up a non-destructive testing laboratory.
He then joined Babcock Power (now Doosan Babcock) where he spent 28 years in a variety of roles, initially as a group leader and subsequently as head of a department providing technical consultancy, development and inspection services to customers in the nuclear, offshore oil & gas, chemical and petrochemical sectors. During this period he also set up and managed several major national and international collaborative projects.
After a period as technology exploitation manager responsible for mentoring new technologies and growing them into sustainable business streams, he was appointed R&D proposals manager. His main responsibilities were securing external funding to support the company’s R&D programme and liaison with universities and research institutes. These activities covered a variety of energy technologies including advanced fossil plant, carbon capture, biomass, wind, marine and solar.
