Glasgow shortlisted in European Capital of Innovation competition

Glasgow is one of 12 finalist cities in the running to be named the European Capital of Innovation and winning €1 million to scale up innovation activities.

The iCapital prize enables European cities to showcase their contribution to developing local innovation ecosystems for the benefit of businesses and the wellbeing of their citizens. The five runners up will each receive 100,000.

Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering – Industry Doctorate Programme (SRPe-IDP)

SRPe is delighted to announce the launch of its new SRPe Industry Doctorate Programme (SRPe-IDP).

A total of 12 project awards are available across the following SRPe strategic themes:

•    Engineering at the Life Sciences Interface
•    Infrastructure and Environment
•    Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Successful projects will be driven by industry / technology-user demand and address key areas of  industrial / technology-user challenge, opportunity or skills development need from across a wide spectrum of organisations and industry / technology-user sectors.

The SRPe-IDP projects must be delivered collaboratively between an SRPe university and an industrial company / technology-user organisation.

GCRF Call: Sustainable energy and international development: beyond technology

On behalf of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), ESRC, NERC and Innovate UK are pleased to invite applications for the ‘UKRI-GCRF Sustainable Energy and International Development: Beyond Technology’ call. Funding has been allocated from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), which is a £1.5 billion fund to support cutting-edge research and innovation which addresses the problems faced by developing countries.

EIC Call: Development of distributed ledger technology demo tools

The Challenge

Following the successful outputs of Stage 1 of the Distributed Ledger Technology-enabled DSO (DeDSO) project, the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) would like to involve developers and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) specialists, to provide a tool that will demonstrate potential DLT applications on the electricity distribution networks. The DNOs are also open to potential partnerships with organisations that can visually present the DLT application(s) (e.g. video or other media). This piece of work will form part of the 2nd stage of the NIA project, which is due to close in March 2020.

SRPe Executive Director appointed to the Scottish Science Advisory Council

The Executive Director of the Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering (SRPe), Dr Caroline Cantley, has been appointed as an expert to support the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland.

The Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC) is Scotland’s highest level science advisory body, providing independent advice and recommendations on science strategy, policy and priorities to the Scottish Government.
 

Dr Cantley is one of five specialists across geoscience, engineering, agri-food and medicine, who will take up a three-year appointment with the SSAC from 1 January 2019.

PhD: Investigation of alternative generation technologies for wave energy

PhD Opportunity

The International Energy Agency’s 2012 Energy Technology Perspectives forecasts up to 337GW of marine energy capacity could be deployed across the world, with about 70% from wave energy, by 2050. The UK has created and retains world leading expertise in academia where we continue to progress research into wave and tidal energy.

Industry and researchers are making strong progress towards reliable, cost-effective wave energy technologies, however to become a viable part of the long-term energy mix, wave energy must continue to strive for Levelised Cost of Energy reductions beyond those which are achievable through application of traditional technologies and architectures. Alternative technologies have the potential to contribute significantly to this objective.

Wave Energy Scotland (WES) has identified a range of potential alternative technologies for the conversation of wave energy to utility-scale electricity. This project, which will be supported by WES, will add scientific rigor by adding structure, depth and analysis to create a structured technology development roadmap for the most attractive of these technologies.

Pilot Water Engine launch

A Revolutionary new hydroelectric system is now in full flow after being installed on a section of the Ale Water near Melrose

The Water Engine System has been designed to generate electricity from water courses with a drop of as little as 50cm.

Having invested £150,000 into building and installing the technology, Clovenfords based Water Engine Technology (WET) Ltd will now use the pilot system to showcase its power generating potential to investors and buyers.

Heriot-Watt's Professor David Flynn has proposed a Fairtrade scheme specifically relating to the low-carbon energy sector. In an article published in The Conversation, he highlights the need for social conscience to take place next to other important considerations, such as climate change. It makes clear that the move to renewables should not replace fundamental rights.

Strathclyde University Gives Expertise to New Electrical Intrastructure Research Hub

The Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult has appointed Strathclyde as one of two universities to form its £3.1million Electrical Infrastructure Research Hub (EIRH). The Hub will accelerate research and development activities, tackling the challenge of making the UK’s electrical infrastructure systems future-proof to meet the needs of the growing offshore wind, wave and tidal industries.

The hub will address key themes such as smart energy systems of the future (including energy storage solutions).

Scottish Government Energy Efficiency Programme has Economy-Boosting Potential

The findings came from a study by The Centre for Energy Policy (CEP) at the University of Strathclyde. According to this, a Scottish Government programme to improve the energy efficiency of homes across Scotland could ultimately boost the economy by £7.8 billion and create 6,000 jobs.

Projections took into consideration longterm considerations and was modelled on potential economic returns from the Scottish Government's Energy Efficient Scotland programme.

Renewables-powered Hydrogen Ferry in Development

When fully developed, HySeas III will be run jointly by ETP partner, The University of St Andrews, and Ferguson Marine Engineering Ltd. This ferry will be fuelled by hydrogen and has received Horizon 2020 funding from the EU that is estimated at £12.6 million.

It is planned that the ferry will operate around Orkney, which already produces a large amount of hydrogen.

Edinburgh University and Shanghai in Low Carbon Masters Collaboration

The Universities have signed an agreement to finance a £600,000 collaborative research, teaching and innovation development fund. As part of this, the China-UK Low Carbon College in Lingang, Shanghai, will offer Masters programmes in Low Carbon Environment and Low Carbon Energy. With great facilities and expansion on the horizon, this is a good time for collaboration.

Thermoelectric Conversion Systems Ltd is a company that has long been supported by ETP. Scottish EDGE is the UK's biggest business funding competition and the winning businesses came from 20 Scottish EDGE finalists who pitched their business idea live in Stirling. Thermoelectric Conversion Systems Ltd proposed a scalable clean-technology to fill the void in present cooling technologies and aims to target data-centre equipment suppliers to develop highly-efficient industry-leading technology. By employing thermoelectric-coolers driven by novel power converters, data-centre cooling efficiency can increase by 50 per cent.

UHI announces 11 Interreg VA Studentships

The University of the Highlands and Islands has announced 11 studentship positions in the areas of marine and bio energy. The deadline is Friday 22nd June 2018 and more information can be accessed at https://www.uhi.ac.uk/en/research-enterprise/grad-school/studentships/.

Studentships will take place at the Bryden Centre and will constitute a PhD Programme for Advanced Marine and Bio-Energy Research. Areas include:

Aberdeen University spin-out work into CO2 reduction recognised internationally

A spin-out company from the University of Aberdeen, Carbon Capture Machine (UK) Ltd, are the only european team to reach the finals of an international competition aimed at carbon reduction. There are 10 finalists in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE. It is a prize focussed to incentivise those who are developing carbon conversion technologies to reduce CO2.

Potential: Energy Efficiency Programme in Scotland Could Boost the Economy

A new study suggests that a Scottish Government programme into energy efficiency of homes could, in fact, boost the economy and create thousands of jobs.

The Centre for Energy Policy (CEP) at the University of Strathclyde modelled the potential economic returns of an estimated £8 billion investment via the Energy Efficient Scotland programme, announced by the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at the All Energy conference in Glasgow on 2 May.

GCU Researchers Put Solar Power in the Hands of Pedestrians at Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022

Researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University have devised solar tiles that will allow outdoor pedestrianised areas to double up as renewable energy makers. The walkable tiles have the potential to unleash a versatility that would place them beyond anything seen before.

The concept was pitched to organisers of the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022, as they look to provide as environmentally-friendly and sustainable a tournament as possible. Innovative ideas have come from all corners of the world, and it was one from Glasgow that really shone. We look forward to seeing how tests progress.

Stuart Speake from Soltropy Ltd Named Inventor of the Year

The Made in Scotland Awards is in its third year and, on April 26th, Stuart Speake of Soltropy Limited was awarded the 'Inventor of the Year' prize. His work looks into innovations such as installing solar thermal panels into mainstream heating systems without the need for antifreeze or crippling maintenance. Amongst other things, this keeps costs down.

Soltropy have been working in partnership with Heriot-Watt University through an InnovateUK project to develop their solar technology including solar testing. This has proved a fruitful partnership for everyone concerned.

Rogue Waves Discovered by the University of Edinburgh

From the University of Edinburgh: So-called rogue waves – which are exceptionally powerful and dangerous – can be exacerbated when they are produced by two sets of waves crossing at a particular angle, a study has found. This phenomenon, which has been demonstrated in an experiment for the first time, is believed to have played a part in producing a 25-metre wave, known as the Draupner wave, which struck a North Sea oil platform in 1995.

Srathclyde University Developing New Battery Technologies

The University of Strathclyde is developing new technologies for batteries, funded by the Faraday Institution.

One project will explore the extension of battery life in electric vehicles. It should aid the optimisation of battery materials and cells to extend batteries’ life, reduce their costs and enhance their safety. The other will develop next generation solid-state batteries, with the aim of demonstrating the feasibility of a solid state battery with performance superior to lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicle applications.

Both programmes can be explored in more detail by following the link on the next page. With the rising need for electric vehicles, the projects' importance cannot be overstated.

Joint PhD: Developing Practical Pervasive Energy Monitoring and Data Analytic Solutions for Housing

We are delighted to support an outstanding and committed graduate to undertake research leading to the award of a PhD from the University of Strathclyde. Alongside the University of Strathclyde, Capita Ltd and BRE Ltd., our funding will cover home tuition fees and provide an annual stipend of approximately £14K.

Project Aim

This 3-year multi-disciplinary PhD project will provide research opportunities for new, energy-related applications and interfaces, which make use of data from a range of emerging sources to provide tailored information to a range of housing stakeholders from individuals to social landlords. Applications developed could include personalised energy and environmental information via a mobile device through to facilities management tools for housing mangers.

Traditionally, the built environment has been poorly served in terms of the data available on energy use and environmental conditions. However, the roll out of smart metering and a range of low cost, environmental monitoring technologies (in products ranging from mobile phones to environmental multi sensors) mean that data on building performance is now readily accessible. This provides a range of opportunities in monitoring and associated data analytics, particularly providing targeted information to householders and building owners. The provision of performance data, derived from monitoring could be particularly useful in addressing some of the key challenges facing the housing sector, including fuel poverty, poor indoor conditions (low temperatures, high humidity and mould growth) and associated ill health.

Celtic Renewables Ltd, the innovative Scottish start-up providing next generation biofuel, has secured planning permission from Falkirk Council to build a commercial demonstrator plant, which will produce over half a million litres of biofuel each year.

The pioneering young company has established a new PLC – Celtic Renewables Grangemouth PLC – specifically to deliver this plant in Grangemouth and has launched a funding campaign seeking to raise £5.25m through an ISA eligible investment with leading p2p investment platform, Abundance Investment (see here to access the fund raise page).

The Scottish Government's Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme: 10 Projects Secured

Ten projects have secured funding under the Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme’s Innovative Low Energy Systems call. These include 2 geothermal projects led by Ross Developments and Renewables Limited: the district heating scheme for the HALO project in Kilmarnock (an announcement about this project was made in August) and a multi-well project at the Macdonald Aviemore resort.

FCH-JU Traineeship

The Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU) operates a traineeship programme. ETP-Funded Study Finds Derelict Land Use to Alleviate Fuel Poverty

An ETP-funded research project has published findings that vacant land could be used to alleviate fuel poverty by developing it into a source of renewable energy. When this land is close to social housing, low-carbon heat could be generated using ground source heat pumps and hypothetically meet the demands of all properties in fuel poverty. All that is needed is renewable energy technology installation.

Wave Energy Scotland Shapes Future Innovation calls

Wave Energy Scotland is seeking to invest up to £320k ex VAT on 4 short projects that will help shape their future research and development programmes. The first two contracts will involve evaluating the innovation landscape to find the most economic electrical connection solutions and the most cost-effective foundations and moorings. Usually these systems in a wave device can amount to as much as a quarter of the capital costs so reducing these costs is of paramount importance. The remaining two contracts will involve ‘horizon scanning’ to understand opportunities in very large scale wave energy converters and alternative generation techniques.  The appointed project teams will likely be looking to other sectors and to the specific characteristics of wave energy generation to find the best opportunities for innovation and cost reduction.

Carnegie Research Incentive Grants: Call for Proposals

The Carnegie Trust is launching new funding for early career researchers.

 

The Research Incentive Grants are  for an Early Career Researcher to undertake, as the Principal Investigator, a short research project, either of a stand-alone nature or in the form of an initial study that could be expected to lead to a more extensive project.

The scheme is open to Early Career Academics employed by a Scottish university on a contract consistent with their having the time and resources required to undertake the proposed research, and must, at the time of application, be planning to remain in post at that university for at least three months after the award period has ended.

Bioprospecting and synthetic biology for novel microbial pigments based on Raman spectroscopy-guided single cell sorting

Pigments have many applications in the pharma- and nutra-ceutical industry. The oceans offer a largely untapped, sustainable resource for novel pigments. Marine cyanobacteria have evolutionary adapted to a wide range of niches in the seabed, resulting in strain-specific pigment palettes that optimally harvest the available photosynthetic wavelengths while protecting the cells against photo-damage. Microbial bioprospecting is a promising route to expand product diversity in the high-value market (carotinoids and phycobilins).
The aims of this project are to:
1. identify cyanobacterial strains in Scottish coastal waters that produce novel pigments,
2. identify the genes that underpin pigment production in the natural strains,
3. transfer them to a fast-growing lab strain for pathway optimization.

The potential for reusing electric car batteries to power the home

Powervault and Renault have come to work together to pilot a project whereby electric car batteries could be used to power the home. The trial will take place over the next year with the potential for exciting outcomes.

Powervault are also using Solar PV to allow individuals to take control of their energy consumption by utilising freely-generated solar energy and off-peak electricity. Electricity bills may drop by uip to 20%.

Strathclyde University: Combined Heat and Power District Energy Network

This £20 million initiative will revolutionise Strathclyde campus’ energy production and efficiency, enabling them to drive down our carbon emissions and create financial savings which can be re-invested in the University.

Sixteen buildings across campus will be connected, with an energy centre as a central hub. The energy centre will also offer demonstration space to enable staff, students and visitors to see how the state-of-the-art system works.

Scientists at Edinburgh University Apply Fingerprint Test for C02 Storage

Researchers from Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS) have developed a way to measure tiny traces of inactive natural gases, known as noble gases, found in CO2. The technique, developed by scientists at the University of Edinburgh, has been conclusively used to investigate an alleged leak from CO2 injected underground at a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada.

While studies have shown that small amounts of CO2 seepage carry no significant threat to human health, the new test will allow scientists and storage site developers to reassure residents that CO2 storage sites are secure.

Findings Launched From Second Phase of Future Power System Architecture Project

From the Energy Systems Catapult, FPSA1 explored the future functional requirements of a transformed electricity system in 2030 and was ground breaking internationally in using systems engineering techniques to articulate complex whole system issues in electricity. It identified 35 new or substantially extended functional requirements, most of which were whole system in nature, and many of which clustered around the grid edge, in parts of the system traditionally not considered in depth by the established electricity industry. 

FPSA2 built on this work by broadening stakeholder engagement, especially at the grid edge and amongst communities, smart cities and other stakeholders. The work deepened and validated the functional analysis and identified innovation requirements.

As part of a pioneering project looking to generate hydrogen from tidal and wind energy, EMEC has recently installed an electrolyser at its tidal test site. To support diversification into this exciting new sector, EMEC are seeking a Hydrogen Development Manager to assess and implement hydrogen related business streams. Heriot-Watt Uni Finds That Brine Can Enhance CO2 Storage Potential

After this study, it is seen that brine can greatly enhance CO2 storage potential of North Sea acquifiers. The project has shown that the controlled production of brine from rocks deep beneath the North Sea can greatly increase the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that can be injected for storage and help to reduce the cost per tonne of tackling the UK’s carbon emissions.

The multi-disciplinary project, funded by the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), has studied how brine production, more often associated with oil and gas operations, can enhance the storage potential of saline aquifers already identified as ideal CO2 stores.

PhD opportunity in Ecology and Renewable Energy in Scotland: Determining the Ecology and Physics of Tidal-Stream Habitats (DEPTH)

This ecologically based MASTS PhD has industry partner European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) www.emec.org.uk and Regulator partner Marine Scotland Science (MSS) Renewables (http://www.gov.scot/Topics/marine/marineenergy) with the student initially based at the University of Aberdeen and co-hosted by SAMS/UHI and will start in Oct 2017. The PhD will focus on uncovering the drivers of animal behaviour and distribution in high energy sites and determine how to best monitor and understand their interactions with marine renewable developments. The student would join the MASTS Graduate School.

This PhD is for the person who is interested in multi-disciplinary research ranging from animal behaviour (fish, seabirds and mammals) and their interactions with oceanographic and noise variables in high energy sites. This PhD will give unique opportunities to preform cutting edge ecological research while working directly with the renewables industries and will influence government policy.

Scottish Government Funding for St Andrews Community Carbon Challenge

Transition University of St Andrews, St Andrews Botanic Garden, and the St Andrews Environment Network have secured £149,986 to further develop a low carbon living programme and community space within the grounds of St Andrews Botanic Garden. This is aimed at helping local residents to reduce their carbon emissions.

The project, called the St Andrews Community Carbon Challenge, has a target of reducing carbon emissions by 600 tonnes and engaging with 1700 people in a range of activities and practical activities.

At University of Glasgow, researchers reveal benefits of providing off-grid solar power to rural communities in India

In joint work from Universities in Scotland and USA, the benefits of providing rural communities in India's Uttar Pradesh region with off-grid solar panels is established. The communities targetted were those who did not have electricity beforehand and used keronsene lamps instead. This lack of electricity affects hundreds of millions of people in India, sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere. As solar panels become ever cheaper, the scope of expanding this research to help more people in rural places is a real possibility.

Aberdeen Student Presents at Major Egyptian Energy Conference

Hossam Almassry (26), a MSc Petroleum Energy, Economics and Finance student from Egypt, was the youngest presenter to an elite group of technical experts at EGYPS 2017, the Egypt Petroleum Show. He is studying in the UK under the prestigious Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Chevening Scholarship, and was selected from over a hundred entrants to present a paper there.

His paper, ‘The Application of the Low Salinity Waterflooding Technique in the ‘Belayim’ Oil Field’, concentrated on a relatively new Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technique.  During the conference, Hossam also had the opportunity to meet John Casson, the British Ambassador to Egypt.

Hossam’s involvement in the conference came as a result of a trade mission led by Scottish Development International (SDI) involving the University of Aberdeen.

Focus on Cooling Systems; Not Electricity

Study at Heriot-Watt University has highlighted the breadth of energy systems that exist, despite society's focus on electricity when discussing energy consumption.

Cooling systems is an area demanding high levels of energy consumption and with much scope for alternative methods to electricity. This demand needs to be met both environmentally and economically; only in that way will cooling systems be able to progress at a sustainable level.

Heriot-Watt is working with Dearman to trial the company's technology in a data centre in Malaysia to provide cold and power energy storage. This versatile example of Cooling comes hot on the heels of the Dearman engine, powered by the phase-change expansion of cryogenic liquid nitrogen, whose first application is as a zero-emission transport refrigeration unit (TRU) now being trialled by Sainsbury’s.

Heriot-Watt's £4 million robotics boost for offshore windfarms

A collaboration between colleagues from Heriot-Watt's Ocean Systems Laboratory and the Smart Systems Group has received funding to deliver a human-robotics hybrid solution for the maintenance and operation of offshore windfarms.

The Heriot-Watt team, which includes Dr David Flynn, Dr Keith Brown and Professor David Lane, is part of a consortium of experts sharing a £4 million grant to create remote inspection and repair technologies using robotics and autonomous systems. These will be used to inspect the condition of subsea power cables, identify problems early and ultimately, extend their lifespan.

Converge Challenge 2017

The quest to find the next generation of entrepreneurs from Scotland’s thriving academic entrepreneur community is underway once again.

Converge Challenge brings together the most ambitious and creative thinkers from any Scottish Higher Education Institute (HEI) and offers three award categories. Converge Challenge: for those with an established idea; KickStart: for early stage ideas; and Social Enterprise: for ideas that will have a positive impact on social and environmental issues. Converge Challenge is open to staff, students and recent graduates and ideas can be for a product, process or a service, at any stage of development and from any industry sector. The key aim of the programme is to support the local enterprise activities that are delivered by individual universities and provide a national platform to showcase the entrepreneurial talent within the Scottish research base.

Between 2011-2015, the initiative has trained 240 emerging entrepreneurs that have formed 62 Converge companies and secured over £39 million of follow-on funding. Converge Challenge cements its position as the leading opportunity for Scotland’s university based entrepreneurs as 4 out of 5 Converge companies have secured follow-on funding and 80% are still trading after three years.

Award Winning Biomass Plant Commissioned at St Andrews University

The University of St Andrews’ strategic aim to become the UK’s first carbon neutral university for energy usage took a major step forward today (Tuesday 6 December) when the biomass plant at the Eden Campus at Guardbridge was officially commissioned.

The £25 million plant on the east side of the former paper mill site produces hot water from a biomass boiler using clean, natural fuels from sustainable sources across Scotland, which is pumped four miles underground to St Andrews where it heats University buildings.

The project is funded by an £11 million loan from the Scottish Partnership for Regeneration in Urban Centres (SPRUCE) Fund, a joint Scottish Government and European Regional Development Fund initiative, managed by Amber Infrastructure Limited and a £10 million grant from the Scottish Funding Council, with the remaining £4 million coming from the University.

For Ofgem’s 2017 Network Innovation Competition (NIC) Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks has issued this Call for Information to enable a third party to either submit an NIC application themselves or to participate in a bid led by SSEN. University of Edinburgh: Solar Power Plan to Purify Water in India

A solar-powered purification system could provide remote parts of India with clean drinking water for the first time.

Researchers at Edinburgh are developing low-cost, low-energy technology to decontaminate sewage water in villages. Chemists and engineers are using state-of-the-art solar energy and water filtration technologies to develop the simple systems. The initiative will not only provide safer drinking water, but could also help reduce the spread of disease, researchers say.

Development of Carbon Capture Technology at University of Aberdeen

Plans to develop technology that converts CO2 into building materials have been given a major boost after the University of Aberdeen became one of only two European universities to reach the semi-finals of a global competition.

The Aberdeen team - named the Carbon Capture Machine - is the only participant to develop technology that is capable of capturing carbon and turning it into valuable carbon-negative industry feedstocks and building materials for use in large-scale construction projects.

All PECRs engaged in energy research across all 12 ETP partner universities are eligible. Wave Energy Scotland (WES) has today announced the start of two landscaping studies: one in Materials and another researching Structural Forces. A new technique for monitoring carbon dioxide could help the energy industry’s efforts to reduce future greenhouse gas emissions, scientists have found.

In a new paper published in the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, researchers describe how they have used the unique signature from traces of the noble gases (helium, neon and argon) to monitor the fate of carbon dioxide stored underground.

Glasgow Caledonian University’s Dr Alistair Sutherland has been awarded a research grant to work with Dunbar Marine Resources, a new SME set up by a Dunbar resident to develop potential uses for seaweed in the Dunbar area. With funding from the Energy Technology Partnership, an alliance of Scottish Universities in energy research, Dr Sutherland of the School of Health and Life Sciences and Dunbar Marine Resources are collaborating on a feasibility study using seaweed washed up on Dunbar’s East Beach to produce renewable bio-fuel and high value co-products.

Canada’s flagship CCS project on coal power ‘will create ripples worldwide’

It has been the most anticipated carbon capture and storage (CCS) project on the planet, and today it claims its place as the world’s first large-scale project to capture CO2 from a coal-fired power plant.

Boundary Dam is the flagship project of SaskPower, a Canadian utility company with around half a million customers across the province of Saskatchewan. The $1.35 billion project sees the integration of a coal-fired power unit with amine capture technology. The capture plant has, in fact, been capturing CO2 since late September, but today sees the start of operations to pipe the greenhouse gas to Cenovus Energy’s oilfields for use in enhanced oil recovery operations – thereby completing the CCS chain.

SCCS statement on US emissions rules for coal power plants

Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS) welcomes the announcement by the US administration on new rules to significantly curb carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Power Plan, released today, will seek to cut CO2 emissions from around 1,600 power plants by 30% by 2030.

With the consultation process almost complete, the Technology Strategy Board’s Energy Systems Catapult is set for launch in April 2015.
