This PhD aims to model an optimised holistic 5 th generation district heating and cooling network, coupling the thermal and electricity network to fundamentally shift from a centralised power and gas grid to a local decentralised whole energy system to meet the Scottish Government’s net zero targets. A techno economic model will be developed to undertake a whole system economic and environmental comparison with other decarbonisation strategies for three scenarios with varying urban density and energy mix. This research will quantify the potential of utilising excess heat to decarbonise the energy sector while reducing levelized cost of energy and electricity grid strain.
