The aim of this PhD programme, is to establish and understand how the properties and structures of polymers change when exposed to extreme conditions. A range of testing methods will be used to characterise the materials properties of the polymers including DSC, TGA-MS, and DMA, while their structure will be probed using solid sate NMR and IR spectroscopies, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. This approach will provide invaluable new data and understanding regarding the use of polymers in oil and gas applications, and has been designed in consultation with Chevron, who have confirmed its relevance and value to the industry.
